I have been watching the rising tide of anti-semitism for about five years. It first appeared online, manifesting itself in the form of the ethno-nationalist trolling that allowed those who claimed to love their country to find a target for their resentment and rage, all in the name of patriotism.
Then it crept into the so-called real world in the form of hypocritical Left-wing virtue-signalling that poses a foundational threat to all that is good, true, meritorious and beautiful.
I am not Jewish myself, but I have seen such hatred up close. Since my collaboration with Ben Shapiro – perhaps the world’s best known Orthodox Jew – via his network The Daily Wire, which is firmly committed to free speech – the anti-semitic online trolls have had plenty to say.
They spoke about my “subordination” to Israel and my being captured by the forces of “international Jewry”. They shared horrific anti-Semitic images, always anonymous, often equipped with Satanic noms de plume, always derisive and psychopathic to the core, hiding their alliance with evil behind the secrecy that enables the worst of them to spring forth and pollute the landscape of public discourse.
I have also spent much of my life studying the evils of racism, obsessed as I have been by the events that unfolded in Germany in the decades prior to World War II, where the proclivity of the majority to turn against a successful minority realised itself with the dreadful efficiency and industry that only the most advanced European state could manage.
I learned plenty from such a study, an exposure to the worst excesses of the worst part of the human psyche – mine included. I learned that there’s plenty of the resentful and murderous spirit of Cain in each of us. I also learned how Jewish people are the eternal canary in the coal mine, and that their persecution signals the downfall of a society.
The foundations of hatred
Why are Jewish people targeted? There are two main reasons. First, as a distinct ethnic and cultural group, they can all too readily be identified as an ‘other’. As a psychologist, it is not controversial to say human beings are clannish. At the most basic level, we protect ourselves first, our families second, our kin third, then whatever community we identify with at a more abstract level. We can overcome and transcend that tendency to identify only with those core groups, but it requires a lot of steered socialisation, and within the confines of a politics that makes honest conduct the norm and trust a form of laudable and necessary courage.
It is no simple matter to organise such a state, psychologically or socially. The free, modern Western democracies, with their grounding in the Judeo-Christian tradition, managed nonetheless to do so, because people within those states were and are, in the main, honest, reliable, productive, generous and truthful. This is not the common situation of mankind. Most societies and countries remain resentful, lying, poverty-stricken mobs of vice and corruption.
Often, the flourishing and freedom of the West is blamed on its proclivity to oppress and exploit. That explanation is a lie. The liars who advance that story know it and use the lie to advance their own self-serving ends. But more on that later.
Because Jewish people have historically been identified as an ‘other’, they can be turned into easy targets, even those deeply assimilated. Even invisible differences can be highlighted by those who desire for their own dark ends to do so. When the tide of anti-semitism rose once again in France in the late 1800s with the Dreyfuss affair, even assimilated Jews began to get understandably nervous, and to prepare. Hence the dawn of so-called Zionism: the request for the Jewish state that, eventually, became modern Israel itself.
The same blood-red tide of anti-semitism that raised its head in France made itself known in Austria, somewhat later, in the political movements that served in part as the precursor to the National Socialist horror of Germany – and all this while the pogroms raged in Eastern Europe and Russia. Jewish people were well integrated, and often for many generations, into Germany, but that fact failed to protect them when the jackbooted thugs began to patrol the streets, just as they are so obviously starting to do again now.
The second major reason why Jewish people have historically been targeted is that as an ethnic group and a faith they have been extraordinarily successful. Success often breeds contempt.
It bears repeating that the successful are always a minority, because to be successful is to be placed in the category of the small number of people who are doing better than the majority. Ten thousand years ago even the richest of people were worse off, all things considered, than the poorest in the West are now. They were still successful, however, by the standards of relevant comparison. Any society that attempts to violate this truism – the Pareto principle that roughly 80% of consequences come from 20% of causes – first, fails, and second, collapses.
Everyone in the Soviet Union became much poorer, because of the misguided Communist attempts to change that distribution. Despite the terrible poverty it created, there still existed a hyper-successful minority. In the dismal environs of that totalitarian hell that minority was composed not of the productive but of those corrupt enough to turn the abysmal oppression of the superstate of the lie to their own immediate personal benefit. Thus the worst devils in Stalinest hell were those who raked in the most fiery coals.
Yet this minority did not see themselves as such: they were the vanguard of the proletariat, of the majority. And being the majority, they could persecute minorities.
The new anti-semitism
It is from this socialist view of human society that the new poisonous anti-semitism we see today was birthed, albeit in a more complicated form.
I would trace it as follows: the Marxist idea that “property is theft” was easily distorted by the resentful teachers and professors in our modern institutions of miseducation. Marx divided the world into two classes: successful and oppressed on an economic basis. But the modern world has gone way past Marx. The postmodernist deconstructionists multiplied the dimensions of comparative oppression far beyond the economic; you can now be oppressed, or oppress, on innumerable grounds, including all those that mark any form of group identity: sex, race, ethnicity, age, appearance, physical ability and attractiveness included.
It became a fire that will not burn out. Discord was sowed by making everyone acutely aware of their comparative disadvantage on the ground of certain attributes, spawning even imaginary grounds of oppression. Now, instead of the unidimensional outcry of the resentful and murderous Marxists – who were at least justified in their claims that economic difference was real – we have the multidimensional shrieking of the meta-Marxists, whose intersectional oppression is infinite in scope and unaddressable even in principle, as the axes of comparison indicating unfairness can be multiplied without end. Make no mistake about it: the clamor for fairness is in truth the desire to maintain the state of holy victimhood forever.
This victim/victimiser narrative ultimately undermines all forms of social enterprise: marriage, family, community, business, state and nation. There is no need for further or indeed any effort in economics, sociology, political science, or politics – even in psychology. All mysteries are solved. The pathway forward, furthermore, becomes clear: moralising, then revenge.
It is from this that the modern strain of anti-semitism has its origin. Because if your group has more of anything than any other group, you are a criminal – a parasite, a predator – and, therefore, seen as the just target for any imaginable retribution and retaliation. Your success turns you into an ultimate oppressor; your talents, your culture, which ensured by its merits you over-representation among the successful, makes you the enemy.
This is precisely what makes Jewish people canaries in the coalmine. They are the eternally successful minority, surviving thousands of years as a distinct group. Thus, any society that no longer welcomes them is on its way to persecuting the successful in the end. The persecution of Jewish people indicates the pending collapse of both psyche and state.
A message to my Jewish friends
This is why it is necessary for the Jewish community to seriously beware of supporting Left-wing ideologies–particularly, although not i issue, in the US. According to polling, three-quarters of American Jews identify with the Left, despite the manner in which Jewish people have been pilloried by them in part, at least, thanks to the neo-Marxist idea that Jewish people are not an oppressed minority, but are an oppressor. Often this falls under the guise of attacking Israel, but I believe this is not the real reason. One cannot be successful and fulminate against success itself. This is why the once-great institutions of higher learning, for example, within which a plethora of Jews once found a welcoming home, have become the very place where they must continually watch their backs. These institutions are denouncing their own success, and the successful people in them.
I’ve seen plenty of Right-wing anti-semite trolls. To call them distasteful is to say almost nothing. They are as close to demonic as anything I have ever encountered, and they sicken me. But they are a pathetic rabble in contrast to the monolith of the oppression-purveyors. The Left may once have been a friendlier ideology compared to the extreme nationalisms of the 20th century, but that has changed.
All the Left-wing obsessions over “diversity”, “equity” and “inclusivity” are a smokescreen; all the faux compassion disguises the modern wolves in sheep’s clothing. Marxism has metamorphosed into a cancer of modern resentful, destructive postmodernism. All the insistence that success is exploitation, the clamor for reparations, the self-pity and accusations: all ultimately birthed the new anti-semitism, where Jewish flourishing is seen as indistinguishable from predation and parasitism.
If Jewish success is deserved – and it is – so is success itself. In consequence, the narrative of the vengeful victim must be shown for what it is: the battle cry of the resentful against the honest, productive and generous. You, my Jewish friends – the chosen people of God – are the archetypes of that latter category, just as it has always been. for better and for worse. Stand by your success and tradition and prevail. Support the revolutionaries of the victim/victimizer narrative, and perish. First.
