Thank you for registering for “Does Ancient History Have a Future?”
We tackled a challenging question: what do we really mean by “ancient history,” and why does it continue to matter?
The conversation quickly moved beyond definitions into a debate about scope and relevance. Some argued that the classical focus on Greece and Rome remains vital to understanding the Western tradition, while others pressed for a broader, more global perspective that includes other ancient civilizations. We asked, should we hold up rigorous, text-based scholarship or adapt to shifting academic and cultural expectations?
Also confronted was the uneasy state of the humanities today....declining enrollments, institutional neglect, and the struggle to defend intellectual inquiry in a utilitarian age. Facing this reality, the question then became whether the field should double down on its traditional strengths or reinvent itself entirely?
It was truly a thought-provoking conversation on what it means to study the ancient world in the modern one!

They say Rome wasn’t built in a day, but no one ever mentions how long it takes for an empire to fall…
The Eastern Roman Empire, also known as Byzantium, was once the jewel of the Mediterranean, outlasting its Western sibling by centuries. Its scholars debated theology, its merchants ruled the seas, and its emperors believed themselves eternal.
