In September 2023 Deutsche Grammophon reissued Michael A. Muller’s debut album, Lower River, which began life as an experiment while Muller was travelling through various remote locations in the Western US, Italy and France. He gathered field recordings from the natural world, later weaving them into original, meditative compositions. “It’s a sonic exploration of what it means to hear versus to listen; to immerse oneself in navigating the subconscious,” says Muller. LA-based director and producer Andrew Gallo created this video for “Fixed Shadow” as part of an interdisciplinary installation curated and toured by Muller when the album was originally released. Actor Marc Menchaca (Netflix’s Ozark) portrays a character experiencing the various proverbial stages of grief. Shot in a single continuous take in California’s Yucca Valley, the film captures the beauty of this wild, deserted setting as the skies darken and the full moon slowly rises.
