Victorious after a war that had united the Greek city-states against a common enemy, Athens emerged confident, capable, and increasingly ambitious. With a powerful navy, eager citizens, and a newfound sense of destiny, the city began to shape not just its own future, but that of the wider Greek world.
What followed was both impressive and troubling... and not quite what anyone had planned… especially since it occurred during what some deem ‘radical democracy’.
Of course, it’s easy to look back on the ancient world as something separate, sealed away behind marble and myth. But stories like that of the Athenian Empire have a way of surprising us. They reveal how prosperity can blur priorities, how leadership can shift into dominance, and how even the best intentions can drift off course when ambition takes the helm...

The Rise and Fall of the Athenian Empire

Since we do live in an age of a sometimes volatile geo-political climate, I thought it might be fun to look through the ages and reexamine the rise, fall, and failings of one of history’s first empires.
So where to start?
After the decisive battle of Plataea in 479 BC, the Greeks surely must have been basking in PanHellenic pride. The united city-states, against all odds, had defeated the seemingly invincible Persian Empire and had expelled them from their lands.
