Christmas carols from the Renaissance and Baroque periods | King's College London Chapel Choir

Crystal clear sounds at this festive concert of English Christmas carols. Most of the carols have their origins in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. However, some are simply popular classics that are British Christmas essentials. The works will be performed by the King's College London Chapel Choir (KCL Chapel Choir) under the direction of David Trendell. The concert took place in 2008 at the Festival de Musique Baroque de Lyon in the Chapelle de la Trinité.

Many Christmas carols have a long history. The oldest are Latin hymns that have been sung at mass and during the Liturgy of the Hours since late antiquity. This changed in the 13th century, when St. Francis of Assisi introduced Christmas carols in Italian to church services for the first time. Until then, only the churchwardens were allowed to sing, but now the congregations could also join in. The use of other languages spread from Italy to France, Spain, Britain and the rest of Europe. Christmas carols in English first appeared in 1426 in a work by John Awdlay. In it, the chaplain from Shropshire listed twenty-five “caroles of Cristemas”.
