Music like a prayer: "Kol Nidrei" is probably the best-known work by German composer Max Bruch (1838–1920). It has also become closely associated with the star cellist Mischa Maisky. For more than five decades, he has performed what he calls his "fateful work" in concert halls around the world. In this recording, Maisky presents plays the piece at a concert celebrating his 75th birthday, accompanied by Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen under the baton of Paavo Järvi. The performance was recorded on July 3, 2023, at the Lübeck Music and Congress Hall.
"All vows, prohibitions, oaths, and consecrations that we may vow or swear… from this Yom Kippur until the next Yom Kippur — may they be annulled and forgiven." These words form the core of "Kol Nidrei," the prayer that opens the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur. In Bruch's composition, Maisky's cello transforms the traditional melody into a lyrical line that echoes the cadence of chant — making it seem as if the instrument is reciting the prayer itself.
Max Bruch was born in 1838 in Cologne to a middle-class Protestant family. His encounter with Jewish musical traditions came through his teacher Ferdinand Hiller in Berlin. Hiller introduced him to the Lichtenstein family; its patriarch, Jacob Lichtenstein, served as cantor of Berlin’s central synagogue and was renowned for the expressive power of his liturgical singing.
Bruch was deeply moved by the beauty of synagogue chant and the spiritual depth of the Kol Nidrei prayer, which asks that vows and oaths be annulled and forgiven. Inspired by its text which, he composed "Kol Nidrei" in 1880, and it remains one of his most haunting and enduringly popular works. Originally written for cello with piano or orchestral accompaniment, the piece was later arranged in several other versions, including for violin, viola, and piano, as well as for organ and solo piano.
For the Riga-born cellist Mischa Maisky, "Kol Nidrei" has accompanied him throughout his musical life. In a 2023 interview, he recalled playing the work at age seventeen for the legendary cellist Mstislav Rostropovich and being accepted immediately into his class at the Moscow Conservatory. This recording was made nearly six decades after that event.
