As soon as we start to believe (imaginatively at least) that AI (which is wonderful for research) can "create" --- even if we "know" that this is not true --- all poetry and literature, as living human activities, will have been destroyed at a single stroke. After a neutron bomb is dropped, all those in its range, even if they initially feel few ill effects, are already dead, a fact that will dawn upon them soon enough. If we attribute to ChatGPT, or whatever else we or our machines come up with, the ability to create, we have not only committed mass cultural and moral suicide, we have effectively forgotten WHAT A HUMAN BEING IS --- and for us to actually BE human beings, without knowing what a human being is, is the worst misfortune imaginable: literally a fate worse than death. How will the poets respond? And how will the academics in the liberal arts respond when they realize that 90% of their students' essays are now composed by AI, which means not just that their students have learned nothing, but that they themselves are now out of a job? How will the universities survive?
