Dear Classical Wisdom Member,
What makes us happy? One of the most eternal and universal questions, it is both deeply philosophical as well as practical. After all, don’t we all want to have a good life?
Aristotle weighs in deeply in the discussion, as one of the foundational thinkers on the topic, he proposes a mixture of human flourishing and virtue... but is that really sufficient in our modern world? Is there more we can add?
Numerous times in the history of western thought and development, we have only progressed once we questioned, rejected or built upon Aristotle’s initial works. Is this another such time?
Today’s podcast is with Lorraine Besser, professor of philosophy at Middlebury College, who specializes in the philosophy and psychology of the good life. She was a founding investigator on the research team studying psychological richness and author of many books, including The Art of the Interesting: What We Miss in Our Pursuit of the Good Life and How to Cultivate It.
We dive into the concepts of happiness as defined in the ancient world versus today as well as practical methods for finding a psychologically richer life. Whether through routine or risk, in the everyday or the extraordinary, how can we be happy?
