Come Ye Sons of Art, Z.323 is one of a series of odes written by Henry Purcell (1659-1695) between 1662 and 1694 in honor of the birthday of Queen Mary II of England. As court composer, it was his task to compose music for official occasions. Come Ye Sons of Art from 1694 was the sixth and last ode he wrote for Queen Mary. She died at the end of the same year. The text is attributed to Nahum Tate, who was poet laureate at the English court at the time and wrote poems for special events and occasions. The Ode for Queen Mary's Birthday Come ye Sons of Art consists of nine movements and is scored for two recorders, two oboes, two trumpets, timpani, strings, basso continuo and a choir with soprano, alto/countertenor, and bass soloists.
Henry Purcell is considered the most important English composer of the Baroque period and enjoyed great fame and fortune during his lifetime. He was engaged as the organist at the Chapel Royal and Westminster Abbey. In the early years of his career, Purcell mainly composed sacred music and odes for royal ceremonial occasions. Many of his later works were inspired by the plays of William Shakespeare. One of the most famous of these is his opera “Dido and Aeneas.” Henry Purcell died in his mid-30s at the zenith of his creative life.
The Ensemble La Fenice was founded in 1990 by cornetist, flautist and conductor Jean Tubéry in Auxerre, France. The musicians specialize in music of the Baroque era played on period instruments.
