Lev Abeliovich's Aria for Violin and Chamber Orchestra from 1973 is a moving work commemorating the victims of the Holocaust. Here, it is being performed for the very first time in Germany by the East-West Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Rostislav Krimer and with Nicolas Dautricourt on violin. The concert took place on September 16, 2025, at the Beethovenfest in Bonn.
Lev Abeliovich was born into a Jewish family in 1912 in Vilna (today Vilnius, Lithuania) which was then part of the Russian Empire. He began studying piano in Warsaw in 1935 after dropping out of law school and then took lessons in composition and performed at the International Chopin Piano Competition in 1938. It was there that the talented artist also met the Polish-born composer Mieczysław Weinberg, with whom he would form a lifelong friendship.
When the Nazis occupied Warsaw in September 1939, Lev Abeliovich fled to Minsk and then continued to Moscow — moves which saved his life. Tragically, his entire family perished during the Holocaust.
After the war, the artist lived primarily in Minsk, but often returned to Moscow, where he was part of Dmitri Shostakovich's inner circle. After the composer's death in 1985, his work was largely forgotten amid the turmoil of the collapse of the Soviet Union.
A few years ago, Lev Abeliovich’s music was rediscovered, largely thanks to the efforts of musicologist, pianist, and conductor Rostislav Krimer. A longtime admirer of Abeliovich’s work, Krimer preserved the composer’s sheet music in Minsk and helped bring it back to public attention. "Abeliovich’s music tells stories that are more relevant today than ever," Krimer says, adding that it deserves to be heard, played, and understood. Classical music publisher Edition Peters has since reissued several of Abeliovich’s works.
Although Abeliovich, like many Holocaust survivors, rarely spoke publicly about his experiences and pain, they can be felt deeply in his music — particularly in Aria for violin and chamber orchestra. Written late in his career, the piece reflects a period of inner reflection and artistic reckoning. It is among his most haunting and humane works, a kind of musical legacy. "Aria is based on a prayer—a prayer for all the victims of the Holocaust, for millions of innocent lives," says Krimer.
