Who can we trust? I think that’s the question we’ve been asking this week at Classical Wisdom. When it comes to events and people from so long ago, it’s a question that it’s important to keep asking. One thing I think we all know - you can’t really trust what you see in the movies, especially when it comes to history. Nevertheless, they still have a powerful influence on society’s understanding of the past. Especially so for the ancient world! A big example of this is the Spartans. They’ve shown up again and again across Hollywood history as the supreme example of warrior culture, and the world’s perception of them has undoubtedly been influenced by their silver screen incarnations. Yet with the Spartans, it runs deeper and spreads wider than just the cinema. There’s a vast history of misperception and propaganda, with significant real world implications. But how are we to know what’s real? How are we to know what to trust?
