Dear Classical Wisdom Members,
What is Eudaimonia? The ancient Greek word for flourishing, often translated as Happiness, is the goal of one’s life… according to Aristotle.
But what does it entail? How exactly do we achieve it? And is the process the same for everyone?
In today’s LIVE session with of and we delve into Eudaimonia and discuss Aristotle’s (not surprisingly) rational approach to the big question… as well as some of the ways in which other philosophers disagreed with him.
After all, the history of philosophy (and indeed of humanity) is interwoven with creative tension, critical debate and engagement with ideas… and so Evan and I did our very best to continue the time honored tradition of the great conversation.
Please enjoy the video above as well as the transcript…
Now, those watching may notice that at the end we didn’t quite get the opportunity to discuss the other philosophical approaches to happiness… I suppose trying to encapsulate Aristotle’s views and critiques into one hour discussion was ambitious enough!
However, for those interested in delving deeper into the topic, Socrates, Plato, the Epicureans, the Stoics, the Cynics and the Skeptics also have fascinating and thought provoking ideas on the subject…
The Stoics certainly departed from Aristotle’s ideas on some critical points, which we address in the conversation…
Classical Wisdom Members, you can also enjoy our previous podcast with Professor Christopher Gill here on the Stoic View of Happiness. Have a listen below and let us know who you think is right… Aristotle or the Stoics?
