In the place of vigilance, by the ladder of attentive watching, I climbed up to the summit of the witnessing of the unseen. I saw the bird of the spirits of the kingdom flying along the shores of the sea of dominion.</p><p>I drank cups of joy from the great sea of ecstasies. I fell into pure love and pure desire. Suddenly, the very depth of pre-eternity was unveiled to me. By the rope of the protecting-grace of unification I was drawn into solitude. In the wilderness of pre-eternity I set out anew on the journey of eternity. After the annihilation of existence, when no station was left, I became a gnostic. I fell into the place of bewilderment. The state overcame me in the state. When love no longer remained — for the cause-of-contingency was lifted away — I became qualified by the very-eye of the attribute. Then, journeying in the Essence and the Attributes, I became one-who-knows. I reached the condition of being-cancelled. The treasures and the symbols of the unseen were opened to me from the threshold of absence, until my soul became firmly-rooted in the innate knowledge. I set my foot out from the Presence. The doorkeeper of the unseen said: “Where are you going?” I said: “I want to put the strangers to the test.” He said: “And what gift will you have for those who seek the lights of the unseen?” I said: “With the key of expansion I will open the doors of the storehouse of innate knowledge to them.” He said: “Blessed be your coming!”</p><div><div><div><p>Spiritualrelief's Substack is a reader-supported publication. I made it known to myself that the subtleties and the symbols of the firmly-rooted ones in gnosis are the gifts and the windfalls of states; reaching them, I saw, is a difficult science. Especially the speech of the people of intoxication — those who, in the sea-bottom of the great sea of pre-eternity, were drowned in oneness — that, from the cleft-clouds of their heart in the moment of the cries and the bewilderments of the overwhelming-states, ecstatic sayings issued: in every word of theirs, a world.</p><p>A world of those who are people of knowledge in the form of knowledge came forth, and they busied themselves with him. They lost themselves to themselves. The strength of love was no companion for them. The slanderers drew the sword of ignorance from the sheaths of the ignorant. So I became thirsty from the surges of love. The jealous-ones-of-God disturbed our rest of soul. They opened the abstruse secrets to the strange ones. They made manifest the sea of signs of the spirits-of-the-holy by the proof of the senses; they bound it in the chain of the speech of those who break the seals.</p><p>Therefore: speak in the language of the people of reality and of the Sacred Law! Speak the symbol of the ecstasy of the lovers and the expression of the tumult of the intoxicated, in the tongue of the people of reality and Sacred Law! Speak it as a known commentary, in the language of the well-known, in the form of an exposition that — under the figure of the form of knowledge and the understanding of the Qur’an and the hadith — gives the matter a subtle treatment! For some time I was in this contemplation. When the matter was lifted from my hand, suddenly I became confident; without warning, with the tongue of the heart, Bismillah, I came to a halt.</p><p>It came to my mind: I shall write a commentary on the ecstatic sayings of the masters, then, after that, in the language of Sufi technical terms, I shall give a commentary in Arabic. I sought help from God, and made him my refuge. When I made an inventory of the stations and flashes of the masters, and read their writings (divan), I found the greater part of their ecstatic sayings to be from that sultan of the gnostics, Bayazid, and from that King of the lovers of love, Husayn ibn Mansur Hallaj. His [Hallaj’s] I saw as the most difficult of all — particularly his.</p><p>I became sorrowful at the way they have been wronged. For the sake of rescuing this science from the slander of the envious, I bore much suffering — until, by the grace of the Truth, I gathered together a single book on the strange-things of the science of shath, and I called it <em>Mantiq al-Asrar bi-Bayan al-Anwar</em> — The Logic of the Secrets in the Exposition of the Lights. When I came to Shiraz and finished the book, one of the dear ones among the brethren and the disciples requested of me: “Speak a Persian commentary on this book of shath.” When I considered, I saw the rights of his companionship binding upon me; for his sake, by the grace of the Real, I plunged into this commentary. I asked the Most High for help to bring it to completion — and to him belongs all praise, may his name be exalted, by his enduring generosity and his pre-eternal grace he gave me the help — until, in a subtle tongue, I gave a commentary on this book; and I named the men of shath in it.</p><p>I began with the shath of the Real — may his name be magnified — and I spoke of the secrets of the letters of the alphabet, and I expounded the rulings of the shath of the ambiguous-passages of the hadith. After that I gave the shath of the four caliphs — God’s grace be upon them all — with several words from the symbols of the heavenly ones, that this might serve as the foundation of the book and as a proof for the sayings of shath. After this I wrote the commentary on the ecstatic sayings of the lovers, beginning with the words of Ibrahim ibn Adham, and Abu Ali Sindi, and Bayazid. From there to Abu’l-Mughith [Hallaj] at the very end I gave a commentary on them all. For those three sections were of three sciences; and each of the three was difficult; and the goal of my book was: first, the strange chains of transmission; second, the wordings of the ecstatic sayings; and third, the commentary on the Tawasin — and that section was the most difficult of all. The Real — exalted and glorified is he — granted me the desire of my goal. May God profit us and you with the understanding of what we have alluded to from the speech of the firmly-rooted-ones and the commentary on the words of the ecstatic ones.</p><div><hr></div><p><em>Companion to the video</em> <strong>A 12th Century Sufi Master Confesses | The Ecstatic Sayings of Ruzbihan Baqli | Part 2 </strong></p><p>James Fleming for Spiritual Relief</p><div><div><iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/qXXidfmsF1E?rel=0&autoplay=0&showinfo=0&enablejsapi=0" frameborder="0" width="728" height="409"></iframe></div></div><div><div><div><p>Spiritualrelief's Substack is a reader-supported publication.
