These portions are distributed among common people and the special, pure servants of the Real, in proportion to each one’s capacity.

For our purposes, four sections will do.

The first is sharīʿa — the precepts of the path regarding obligations and restrictions related to things and actions of this world.

The second is the inner meaning and reason for these precepts — ṭarīqa, the conceptual knowledge of things not self-evident. The mystical science.

The third is the hidden spiritual essence itself — maʿrifa, wisdom.

The fourth is the inner essence of this essence — al-ḥaqīqa, the truth.

The one who aims at completion must learn and know all four, and find paths leading to them.

It is said: the path is a tree. Its branches are mysticism. Its foliage is wisdom. Its fruit is truth. The Qur’an, with all its commentaries and interpretations, contains them all.

The Two Layers of the Qur’an

The Qur’an has tafsīr and taʾwīl. Tafsīr is commentary — the clarification and elaboration that common people need. Taʾwīl is interpretation through analogy — the clarification of the inner meaning, through inspired reflections experienced by the true believer.

Taʾwīl belongs to those who are firmly rooted — the rāsikhūn fī-l-ʿilm. Like the date palm whose roots hold firm in the ground, their feet hold firm in this world. And like the date palm whose fronds rise into the sky, their hearts and minds rise into heavenly knowledge. The constancy that has no doubt in it — this is placed in the centre of their hearts by the grace of Allah.

He it is who has revealed the Book to you. Some of its verses are decisive — they are the basis of the Book. Others are allegorical. Those whose hearts are perverse follow the allegorical verses, seeking to mislead, seeking to give their own interpretation. But none knows the interpretation except Allah, and those firmly rooted in knowledge. They say: we believe in it. All of it is from our Lord. And none are mindful except those who understand.

Qur’an 3:7

It is said of this verse: if the door in this verse would open, all the doors of the inner secret realm would open with it.

The Four Traps of the Nafs

The true servant is obliged to fulfill what has been given and to abstain from what has been forbidden. He is also obliged to oppose his own nafs — the ego, the commanding self, the lower dictates of his flesh.

At the level of sharīʿa, the opposition of the nafs comes in the form of imagination and illusions contrary to reality.

At the level of ṭarīqa, the treacherous nafs encourages you to follow what is merely close to the truth. To follow distorted teachings. To follow false teachers and false ideas.

At the level of maʿrifa, the nafs tries to push you to claim sainthood. Even divinity. The worst of all errors — making yourself a partner to the Real.

Have you seen the one who takes his own passion as his god?

Qur’an 25:43

But at the level of al-ḥaqīqa, something different happens. Neither the nafs nor the accuser can reach there. Even the angels cannot set foot there. Anyone but the Real who approached that level would burn to ashes — as Gabriel said, at the edge: if I take another step, I will burn to ashes.

The true servant is free from the opposition of the nafs and the accuser because he is protected by a shield of sincerity and purity.

The accursed one said: by Your might, I will lead them all astray — except those of Your servants who are sincere and pure.

Qur’an 38:82–83
