Schubert: Entr’acte No. 3 from "Rosamunde" | London Symphony Orchestra & Sir John Eliot Gardiner

<p><iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" width="640" height="390" src="https://www.inoreader.com/yt-embed/?v=KKtXW6mjC28" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" style="width:100%;aspect-ratio:16/9;height:auto;display:block;border:0;" frameborder="0"></iframe></p><p>It features not only one of Franz Schubert’s most famous melodies, but one of the most celebrated in all of Romantic music: the Entr’acte No. 3 in D major from "Rosamunde, Princess of Cyprus" (D 797). The piece is performed here by the London Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Sir John Eliot Gardiner in a concert that took place on July 5, 2022, at St Luke’s Church in London.<br> <br> The incidental music for "Rosamunde, Princess of Cyprus" was composed by Franz Schubert (1797–1828) in December 1823. The libretto for this "grand romantic play with music," as he called it, was written by the poet and amateur writer Helmina von Chézy (1783–1856). Despite the reservations of some of his friends about setting a text by Chézy, Schubert accepted the commission. The premiere of "Rosamunde" took place on December 20, 1823, in Vienna, but it was not well received by the audience and was removed from the program after only its second performance. The failure was attributed to the libretto, while Schubert’s music was widely praised and soon began to be performed independently in concert halls.<br> <br> The incidental music consists of ten individual numbers preceded by an overture. The Entr’acte No. 3 is the most popular piece among them, and its memorable main theme has gone down in history as the "Rosamunde theme." Schubert reused it in two other works: First, in a varied form in the second movement of the String Quartet in A minor No. 13, D. 804 (Op. 29 No. 1), which he himself casually referred to as the "Rosamunde" Quartet; and second, slightly altered, in the Impromptu in B-flat major, D. 935 No. 3 (Op. 142 No. 3). He composed the quartet in 1824, just one year after the incidental music, and the Impromptu in 1827 — so for a full four years, the Rosamunde theme seems to have been stuck in the composer's head.<br> <br> If one tries to uncover the secret behind this early Romantic piece, two things stand out: Firstly, the melody is so simple that it could almost be a children’s song. At the same time, it has a calm, lyrical character, giving it an idyllic and sensitive mood. The appealing theme is ideally complemented by the form of the piece, namely a well-established five-part rondo ("Kleine Rondoform"). This form, long popular in the Baroque and Classical periods, follows the pattern ABACA. The first theme (A) appears three times, interspersed with two contrasting sections (B and C).
