A group of former choir boys from Highgate Boys School in London, who were conducted by the renowned British composer Benjamin Britten, recently reunited 61 years after their original performance. In 1963, the choir recorded Britten’s War Requiem at Kingsway Hall, a session that was re-released by Decca Records last year. To mark the occasion, Decca placed an ad in a local paper to track down surviving members, resulting in a reunion of around 17 choristers at the Dolby Theatre in Soho.
Among those present was Laurence Bard, now 74, who fondly recalled the event as a “delightful” opportunity to reconnect with his fellow singers and the music they had performed decades earlier. He shared that the group listened to an extract from Britten instructing the orchestra during the recording process, an amusing memory of Britten’s somewhat dictatorial style.
Reflecting on the significance of the recording, which went on to win multiple Grammy Awards in 1964, Bard expressed his gratitude to Decca and his former music teacher, Edward Chapman, for their roles in shaping the choir’s success. He joked that, as a teenager, his interests leaned more towards The Beatles, yet he acknowledged the prestige of the project at the time. Another notable attendee of the reunion was composer John Rutter, who also participated in the original recording. Rutter praised the newly remastered version of War Requiem as a “marvellous achievement.”
