
Johann Sebastian Bach's second Italian cantata: This is how one might characterize the five-movement cantata Non sa che sia dolore, which is listed in the Bach works catalog under the number 209 (BWV 209) - although its authenticity is occasionally doubted. This performance features Lisa Larsson (soprano) and the ensemble Le Concert d'Astrée under the direction of Emmanuelle Haïm. The concert took place on January 24, 2004 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.

It is still disputed whether the secular cantata Non sa che sia dolore was actually written by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750), but its musical style suggests that the great German Baroque composer was indeed the composer. Because of its limited instrumentation (transverse flute, 2 violins, viola, cello, double bass, theorbo, harpsichord/organ), it can also be described as a chamber cantata, a popular genre in Baroque music in Italy. It is fitting that the text of the solo cantata is in Italian. Incidentally, Non sa che sia dolore is one of only two secular cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach with an Italian text.
The libretto of the cantata BWV 209 has been a headache for many scholars. Its Italian is so deficient that the content remains partly unclear. In addition, the unknown librettist used text passages from two libretti by the Italian Baroque poet and librettist Pietro Metastasio (1698 - 1782), who was famous in his day, in the two arias. In terms of content, the soprano cantata sings of the farewell of a friend or colleague, who apparently returns to his southern German hometown of Ansbach. The cantata was probably composed during Bach's time in Leipzig, after 1729.

Chi dall' amico suo parte e non more.
Il fanciullin' che plora e geme
Ed allor che più ei teme,
Vien la madre a consolar.
Va dunque a cenni del cielo,
Adempi or di Minerva il zelo.
III. Aria:
Parti pur e con dolore
Lasci a noi dolente il core.
La patria goderai,
A dover la servirai;
Varchi or di sponda in sponda,
Propizi vedi il vento e l'onda.
IV. Recitative:
Tuo saver al tempo e l'età constrasta,
Virtù e valor solo a vincer basta;
Ma chi gran ti farà più che non fusti
Ansbaca, piena di Tanti Augusti.
V. Aria:
Ricetti gramezza e pavento,
Qual nocchier, placato il vento,
Più non teme o si scolora,
Ma contento in su la prora
Va cantando in faccia al mar.
