Dear Classical Wisdom Reader,
Long time readers may recall an event we did earlier in the year with Massimo Pigluicci, Donald Robertson and John Sellars on ancient philosophies that go beyond the currently popular Stoicism. It’s an important reminder of the vast wealth of interesting ideas from the ancient world... and the topic (or more precisely the book that our conversation was based upon, is in the current classics discussion following a recent WSJ review). As such, I thought it best to publish our discussion, which you can watch below...
But first, I want to ask an important question: When learning lessons from philosophy, can we cherry pick or do we always have to take it as a whole?
Do we have to, for example, accept Stoicism's framework with regards to fate to gain inspiration on how to accept things beyond our control? Do we need to take cold showers in order to appreciate the mental exercises of a 1000 foot view? And if we need to be a ‘purist’ in one specific philosophy, would we have to throw out the vast majority of philosophy, since so little of the different ideas agree? Or is it better to be like Cicero, the famed eclectic, and choose selectively from all the ancient philosophies?
Leave a comment below and let me know what YOU think on this topic!
All the best,
Anya Leonard

P.S. How can we keep the Great Conversation alive? How do we bring these ancient ideas to modern discussions so that we can learn and engage with these historic texts today? And more importantly, how do we ensure that these works are preserved for future generations?
To do this, we need to cultivate interest in ancient philosophy, history, mythology and literature...and to that end I want to say a huge THANK YOU to our Classical Wisdom Members, who help support this project. Together we can spread interest in the classical world, employ ancient lessons and insights when we need them the most, and preserve these texts and ideas for the future…
