Baroque music as an exceptional sound experience! André Campra’s rarely-performed Messe 'Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam' is heard here in an equally rare instrumentation: with a double women’s choir and double orchestra, some of whose members are playing period instruments. Musicians from Le Concert Spirituel sing and play under the baton of Hervé Niquet at the Chapelle de la Trinité in Lyon, France. The concert took place as part of the 32nd Lyon Baroque Music Festival in December 2014.

André Campra (1660 – 1744) wa sone of the most important French Baroque composers, along with Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632 – 1687) and Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683 – 1764). During his lifetime, Campra was famous as much for his liturgical music as for his operas. He held the highest office possible for a church musician in France at that time: director of the church choir at Notre Dame de Paris. Alogn with good connections to the Jesuits, Campra also had contacts to the French aristocracy and the court at Versailles.
The French composer published his Messe 'Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam' in 1699. The title takes up the motto of the Jesuit order: Omnia ad maiorem Dei gloriam (All for the greater glory of God). This mass is rich in contrasts in melody and rhythm. Its broad spectrum of emotion and theatricality make it a typical example of Baroque religious music.
The concert by the orchestra and choir of Le Concert Spirituel, conducted by Nervé Niquet, is titled “Splendeurs Vénitiennes” (= Venetian splendor). During the Baroque era, Venice was a musical hub for the Italiante style, popular across Europe – for which French composer André Camprs also had a passion. For “Splendeurs Vénitiennes,” works by Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi (1678 – 1741) were also performed. Vivaldi spent many years teaching at the Ospedale dell Pietà, an orphanage for girls, which was also one of the most famous music schools in Venice. Among Vivaldi’s responsibilities was holding regular concerts with the girls. So what could be more fitting than mounting a contemporary concert under the name of “Splendeurs Vénitiennes” with a choir consisting solely of women’s voices? It’s this special lineup that makes Campra’s Messe Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam such an exceptional musical experience.
