Bach’s music calls for peace in the Middle East at the Bachfest 2025. In the Arabian Passion, arias from Bach’s St. John Passion and St. Matthew Passion are sung in Arabic. While the words and music remain true to Bach’s composition, Lebanese singer Fadia Tomb El-Hage performs the arias in Arabic and traditional Arabic instruments are played. Meant as a plea for peace, the Arabian Passion project emerged after the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, which had devastating consequences for civilians.
Musician and musicologist Vladimir Ivanoff sees himself as a bridge builder between Eastern and Western musical traditions. Since 2006, he and his Ensemble Sarband have performed The Arabian Passion repeatedly, both in Europe and the Middle East, including in crisis zones. Ivanoff says the sentiment of Bach’s music relates directly to the Middle East — the birthplace of Jesus Christ and home to many who suffer as a result of war, displacement and a history of oppression.
