DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphony No. 5 in D Minor, Op. 47

Musicians:
AURORA ORCHESTRA
ALENA BAEVA | Violin
NICHOLAS COLLON | Conductor

A whole symphony played by memory, in all the orchestra parts — this impressive trademark of the Aurora Orchestra is a perfect fit with the festival slogan "Alles ultra." The London-based musicians perform Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony with incredible intensity. At the height of the Stalinist terror, the composer wrote it to ensure his survival, resulting in an oppressive work that engages in a humanist dialogue with Beethoven’s bright and buoyant Violin Concerto. Alena Baeva makes her solo debut at Beethovenfest. The Kyrgyz musician was brought up in the renowned Russian violin tradition, but from there, she developed a very personal and modern sound. Fittingly, she has performed Beethoven’s standard work with both classical and historically informed orchestras. As she joins Nicholas Collon and the Aurora Orchestra, we can look forward to a buoyant and dynamic interpretation combining the best of both worlds.

Described as "a magnetic presence" and "a constantly fascinating sound technician" (New York Classical Review), violinist Alena Baeva is considered one of the most exciting, versatile, and captivating soloists active on the world stage today, working with leading conductors including Paavo Järvi, Vladimir Jurowski and Riccardo Minasi. Born in Kyrgyzstan with Slavic-Tatar ancestry, Baeva had her first violin lessons at the age of five in Kazakhstan before studying in Russia, and was also taught by Mstislav Rostropovich and Shlomo Mintz. At only 16 years of age, Baeva won the Grand Prix at the 12th International Henryk Wieniawski Competition (2001). Following this, she went on to triumph at the Moscow International Niccolò Paganini Competition (2004), and at the Sendai International Violin Competition (2007). Alena Baeva plays on the "ex-William Kroll" Guarneri del Gesù of 1738.

British conductor Nicholas Collon is recognized for his elegant conducting style, searching musical intellect and inspirational music-making. He is the founder and principal conductor of Aurora Orchestra and has been chief conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony since 2021 (renewed until 2028). He was chief conductor of the Residentie Orkest in Den Haag (latterly also artistic advisor) from 2016 to 2021, and was principal guest of the Gürzenich Orchester from 2017 to 2022. Born in London, Nicholas Collon is a violist, pianist and organist by training, and studied as an organ scholar at Clare College, Cambridge.

The Aurora Orchestra’s unique creative approach combines world-class concerts with bold innovations in programming and performance practice. Since its inception in 2005, under the leadership of principal conductor Nicholas Collon, it has established itself as one of Europe’s leading chamber orchestras. It has won prestigious awards including three Royal Philharmonic Society Music Awards, an ECHO Klassik and a Classical:NEXT Innovation Award. In recent years, Aurora has further developed its hallmark of playing concerts from memory. It is believed to be the first orchestra in the world to perform entire symphonies in this way, without sheet music on stage.
