Avi Avital is one of the world's most sought-after mandolin virtuoso; his repertoire ranges from works of the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods, through to genres such as folk music and jazz. And to come back to the question: the mandolin is not a sweet Italian specialty (mandorlini), but a fascinating plucked string instrument. It's a member of the lute family, whose origins date back to 18th-century Italy. The instrument was played throughout Europe but disappeared after the Napoleonic Wars (1803–1815).
