Before the thirty flashes of his Lawaih begin — before the metaphysics of divine Unity and the descent of the names into manifestation — Sufi Master Jami pauses. He addresses God directly. Not as a theologian. Not as a poet. As a heart that knows it cannot see clearly, asking to be shown.
This is a munajat: from najwa, secret speech. The intimate address conducted between the servant and God in the register of whisper rather than proclamation. Not dua in the sense of open petition — something quieter. An address that assumes nearness, that speaks as if the one being spoken to is already listening.
The subject is the veil. Not the great metaphysical distance between creature and Creator. The veil that is far more intimate and difficult: the quality of our own perception. The world can be a mirror — catching the light of the Real, returning it. Or it can be a wall — a surface at which attention stops. Jami's prayer does not ask God to change the world. It asks God to change the eye.
Drawn from the opening supplications of the Lawaih (Flashes of Light), Herat, 1476. Expanded across five movements: The Veil, The Mirror, Deliverance from Self, Love and the Turning, and The Stripping — the final movement in the register of Rabia al-Adawiyya, the prayer that asks not merely for union but for the stripping of every motive for seeking it except God alone.
