Sufism is the mystical dimension of Islam — concerned not with belief about God but direct inner experience of God. Known in Arabic as tasawwuf, it teaches that the human soul is an emanation of the Divine essence, temporarily separated from its source, and that spiritual life exists to complete the return.

The core concepts covered in this essay:
Fana — the extinction of the ego-self in God, the highest station of the path. Baqa — survival in God that follows fana. Together they describe a single moment: the false self drops away and what remains has always been there.
Ma'rifa — direct knowledge of God by the illuminated heart, not intellectual understanding. The inner light — nur al-qalb — is the only faculty capable of perceiving the Infinite.
Tawhid — the unity of God — understood not as theology but as lived realisation that God alone exists. The phenomenal world is the self-manifestation of Absolute Beauty, which desired to be seen and created a mirror in which to behold itself.
Maqamat and ahwal — the stations and states of the path, moving through service, love, seclusion, knowledge, ecstasy, truth, union, and finally fana.
Mahabba — divine love as the central force of creation and the only means of return. Fear and hope are lesser motivations. Love alone dissolves the separation between the soul and its source.
Awliya — the friends of God, those who have traversed the path to its end and live in permanent intimacy with the Divine.
The Sufi poets — Rumi, Hafiz, Ibn al-Farid — wrote entirely within this theology. Their imagery of wine, the beloved, and the tavern is a precise symbolic vocabulary for states that ordinary language cannot reach.
