Dear Classical Wisdom Reader,

I can’t quite put my finger on it… why aren’t the Pre-Socratics more famous? Why aren’t they the household names they so clearly deserve to be?

It simply doesn’t make sense that family gatherings don’t include lively discussions about Leucippus and Democritus and their astonishing conception of atoms.

Or that people don’t debate the fascinating differences between Heraclitus and Parmenides at dinner parties…

(Though can you imagine how much more fun those parties would be if they did? And if you happen to be hosting one, could you please invite me?)

And why don’t Anaxagoras and Anaximander get any love?

Surely it can’t just be because their names are difficult to pronounce. (Though, in all fairness, that probably doesn’t help.)

No, it’s Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle who get all the attention. And yet, in so many ways, they were deeply indebted to the thinkers who came before them.

Not only that, these earlier philosophers had astonishing ideas that revolutionized the way we understand our world. From music and mathematics to atoms and anatomy, they explored concepts that would only be fully appreciated thousands of years later.

It boggles the mind. They boggle the mind.

So you can imagine how excited I was to dive into this extraordinary world with the renowned philosopher Angie Hobbs for yesterday’s event, Before Socrates: The Strange Ideas That Shaped Philosophy.

And what a fascinating journey it was!

We explored the remarkable ideas and unusual legacies of Thales, Heraclitus, Pythagoras, Parmenides, and Zeno… to name drop just a few. We considered how much we can really know about these ancient thinkers, why philosophy flourished when and where it did, and whether Socrates truly was the great turning point he is so often made out to be.

The questions from our audience, both during the event and in our Substack thread, were fantastic. A huge thank you to everyone who submitted one!

In fact, I enjoyed the conversation so much that I wanted to share it with everyone.

So, whether you missed the event or would simply like to revisit some of these mind-boggling ideas, you can watch the full recording above.

And there’s more!

As mentioned during our discussion, Angie has recently published her excellent book, Why Plato Matters Now, which you can find here.

She will also be joining us as our featured guest lecturer on our 2027 journey through Greece and Turkey!

It’s going to be a remarkable adventure, taking us to some of the very places we discussed in yesterday’s conversation. We’ll explore the ancient world together, following in the footsteps of the thinkers whose ideas continue to shape our lives today.

If you’d like to learn more about our itinerary, the stunning ship that will carry us through the Mediterranean, and how to reserve your place, you can find all the details here:

Discover More

All the best,

Anya Leonard

Founder and Director

Classical Wisdom
