An accordion in a classical orchestra? This for some might seem unusual. But for Martynas Levickis, it's just the beginning. The young Lithuanian is one of the world's most sought-after accordionists. We met him at the Rheingau Musikfestival in Wiesbaden, where he performed with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen under the baton of Omer Meir Wellber. The program included Georges Bizet and Ernest Guiraud's Carmen Suite (arranged for accordion and orchestra by Martynas Levickis) as well as Camille Saint-Saëns' Introduction et Rondo capriccioso, Op. 28 (for accordion and orchestra).
Martynas Levickis was born in 1990 and grew up in a small town in Lithuania – initially wanting to learn the piano. But pianos were expensive, so his godfather gave him a small accordion instead. It wasn't long before his talent was discovered through competitions and performances on television. By the age of 20, he even became the Accordion World Champion and won on the TV show "Lithuania's Got Talent," launching his international career. Today, Martynas is breaking musical boundaries, combining classical with pop or tango. He wants to bring the accordion out of its niche and even reinvent it.
