In this video, world-renowned conductor and pianist Daniel Barenboim performs the work to open a special piano concert of Chopin pieces at the National Philharmonic in Warsaw, Poland. The concert took place on February 28, 2010, to mark the 200th anniversary of Chopin’s birth and the 60th anniversary of Barenboim’s stage debut.<br> <br> The piece doesn’t follow a traditional sonata form but rather unfolds as a continuous musical narrative throughout which contrasting ideas emerge and transform in unexpected ways. The "Fantasy" title reflects the sense of freedom from formal structures and bold emotional expressions that early-19th century Romantic composers like Chopin (1810-1849) lived for. <br> <br> The piece begins with a solemn march that establishes a dramatic atmosphere before giving way to a series of highly expressive episodes. In this way, Chopin combines improvisatory freedom with his deep compositional knowledge creating a large-scale form that balances spontaneity and coherence. Changes of mood, key, texture and tempo contribute to the impression of a musical journey that is both deeply personal and richly varied.<br> <br> Chopin was 31 and at the height of his artistic maturity when he composed the piece — and the Fantasy in F minor certainly demonstrates an established composer's mastery of musical development and expressive piano writing. Since age 21, the composer had been living in Paris and was by then a highly respected composer, performer and teacher. His tumultuous nine-year relationship with French novelist George Sand — the pen name of Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin — was in its most stable year when he composed the Fantasy in 1841. Sand, an early feminist who shocked Paris by wearing men's clothing and refusing to adhere to gender norms, was taken by Chopin's compositional genius — together, they had one of the most love affairs of the relationships of the Romantic Era. <br> <br> The work is masterfully played in this recording by Daniel Barenboim. Born in 1942 in Buenos Aires, he gave his first public piano performances as a child and quickly established himself as a prodigious talent. As a pianist, Barenboim is especially celebrated for his interpretations of composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert and Wagner, combining intellectual depth with expression. Alongside his distinguished conducting career where he has led some of the world's finest orchestras, his lifelong engagement with the piano has shaped his reputation as one of classical music’s most thoughtful and versatile artists.
