In musical form, it expresses an existential struggle between the idyll of nature, human despair and demonic forces. The performance in this video took place on 28 April 2017 at the Kulturpalast Dresden and features the Dresden Festival Orchestra conducted by Ivor Bolton.<br>

The opera "Der Freischütz," Op. 77, with a libretto by German dramatist Friedrich Kind, premiered on 18 June 1821 in Berlin and has since come to be known as a milestone in operatic history. Weber combines folk-inspired elements with a newly developed Romantic musical language to vividly bring the themes of nature, hunting and supernatural forces to life. The story follows a young hunter named Max who makes a pact with the devil to win a shooting competition with specially created "magic bullets." Along the way, he becomes entangled in a conflict between dark forces and moral responsibility.<br>

The overture begins with a slow introduction in which dark timbres and subdued dynamics foreshadow the ominous atmosphere of the Wolf’s Glen. Particularly striking are the low strings and the expressive writing for the winds. As the overture progresses, contrasting themes emerge that are associated with nature and the countryside. These motifs are particularly evident in the horn passages, whose distinctive character has come to symbolize the forest and hunting imagery that occupied a central place in the Romantic imagination.<br>

With the transition to the Allegro (3:06), a dramatic sonata form unfolds, in which the thematic contrasts become increasingly sharpened. The rhythmic drive and clear motivic development already reveal Weber’s sense of dramatic concentration. A balance between lyrical and threatening moments remains a key structural principle. After a tense general pause, the radiant climax arrives (8:23), symbolically anticipating the opera’s happy ending.<br>

The Dresden Festival Orchestra performs on period instruments and adheres to historically informed performance practice. The result is a transparent, clearly articulated sound that differs noticeably from modern orchestral interpretations.<br>
