Samuel Barber’s (1910–1981) Violin Concerto, Op. 14, is considered the most popular violin concerto by an American composer among soloists and audiences — perhaps because it is characterized by late-Romantic catchiness and rich emotion, allowing the soloist to both revel in the rich melodies and showcase the work's virtuosity.
The story behind the creation of Barber’s Violin Concerto, however, was anything but straightforward. In 1939, Barber was commissioned to write a violin concerto for his friend and former classmate Iso Briselli, with the premiere scheduled for January 1940. Commissioning the work was the industrialist and philanthropist Samuel S. Fels, a patron of the young Briselli. Barber showed the first two completed movements to his friend, who was very impressed and eagerly awaited the third movement, which was to be significantly more challenging for the soloist. Briselli’s teacher at the time, however, deemed the first and second movements not virtuosic enough and feared that his student would ruin his reputation by performing them. He asked Barber to revise the piece, but Barber refused. As a result, the collaboration between Barber and Briselli fell through.
The premiere of the Violin Concerto took take place the following year on February 7, 1941, in Philadelphia, with the renowned Albert Spalding as soloist. After only a few performances, it was clear that Barber’s concerto would remain a popular work. In this piece, stylistically, Barber continues his tendency toward traditional composition methods: The first movement, the Allegro, follows a strict sonata form and is characterized by two melodic themes, with the second theme featuring syncopated rhythms. In the slow second movement, the oboe introduces the theme, which is then taken up by the violin. The second movement is even more lyrical than the first and could pass for a wistful Romantic masterpiece on its own. The third movement, Presto in moto perpetuo, stands in contrast to the first two movements. A continuous motion, accented by sharp beats, drives this crisp, brief movement forward. The breathless tempo alone demands peak performance from both the soloist and the orchestra. A spirited finale brings Samuel Barber’s only concerto for violin and orchestra to a positive close.
