Welcome to our newsletter, dear reader,

• Our first library addition this month is a chapter on the doctrines of beauty, love and the creation of world and man in the writings of Ruzbihan Baqli. This famous Persian Sufi of the twelfth century was a gnostic of love mysticism known as Shaykh-e Shattah, the “master of the ecstatic utterances”, due to the lightning-like quality of his inspired sayings. Seeing human life as a search for divine beauty, Ruzbihan suggests that all beauty found in this world is a reminder of God’s beauty as witnessed on the Day of the Covenant.

In everyone who witnesses the Unseen, there remains the sweetness of the address of eternity. When those who have reached the station of audition hear any goodly sound, see and witness anything comely and deemed beautiful, or smell any goodly fragrance in this world, they will hear it as an intermediary between the attribute and the essence through the quality of being prior to any act that emerges from the Real. It is as if one hears from the Real through the Real. Hence, every speck of engendered being has a specific tongue that speaks to him with the eternal speech.

• Next we have an acoustic example of beauty in the world, with an article on Heinrich Biber’s 17th-century “Rosary Sonatas” (also called “Mystery” Sonatas) for violin and keyboard, including links to recordings and reflections on the structure and technique of this early music masterpiece. Of particular note is Biber’s use of scordatura or “mis-tuning”, whereby subtle shifts in the instrument tuning not only produce evocative haunting harmonies, but also open doors to “unknown and unfamiliar” acoustic realms, and to an implicit musical dialogue with the scales and modes of other cultures and times. “Aquinas: humans come to know the divine by ‘moving from what is familiar to what is unknown and unfamiliar’.”

The Mystery Sonatas transform the violinist… They recall a paradoxical relation between sound, embodiment, and spirituality that Braxton Shelley observes in African-American gospel performance, where “intensified physicality actually loosens the believer’s relation to the material world, enhancing his or her connection to what is often called ‘the spiritual realm’.”

Rosary Sonatas V, “The Finding of Jesus in the Temple”, Sarabande (3:33), performed by Andrew Manze and Richard Egarr.
• Finally, we bring a chapter on prayer from Beauty and Light: Mystical Discourses by a Contemporary Female Sufi Master, where we can appreciate the penetrating insights of Turkish murshida (spiritual guide) Cemalnur Sargut.

When the Imam began to explain in great detail how people would burn because of their sins, the arif was saddened and said, “O Imam! God is not going to ask us what you say He will. He is going to ask us only one thing, ‘My servant, I was with you all your life; who were you with?’” — Worship encompasses all the states and actions that will allow us to say, “I was with You!”

The post Cosmology, Beauty and Light, and the Mystery Sonatas first appeared on The Matheson Trust.
